We all know that there is very little that makes your life easier and house tidier than a well thought out closet storage system. Life is simpler when there is a place for everything and everything is in it's place. Spending some time thinking about effective closet organization and storage is time well spent.
And as previously mentioned these closet systems can be very inexpensive. For the purposes of this article I will focus on cheap closet storage solutions. These solutions will all cost under $50.00 and can be put together in less than one day.
Every closet can benefit from a bit of proper organization. There are a number of cheap, quick and easy ways to organize a closet. One of the most inexpensive ways is to purchase some plastic stacking shelves and some see-through plastic bins. Both of these items can be found at larger grocery stores or you local hardware store. You may also be able to find the shelving at a second hand store. The bins regularly go on sale so watch the sale sheets and never pay full price. Make sure the bins are approximately 2 inches less in height than the height allowance of the shelves. If the bins are too tall the whole system will be awkward to use or simply will not work. Apply a 3x5 inch sticker on the end of each bin and make a list of of the contents of each bin.
An even cheaper closet storage system can be made with a little ingenuity and some recycled materials. Instead of buying shelving and bins look around your basement or neighborhood for shelving material. Bricks and pieces of 4 foot boards would work just fine. Before assembling your recycled shelves make sure to wash your materials thoroughly and carefully. Visit your local liquor store and ask abot taking some boxes off their hands. Really, any box can be used however liquor boxes or wine boxes seem to be the sturdiest. You can paint each box which gives this recycled closet storage system a look of uniformity. Write down the contents of each box on a piece of paper and either tape or glue the list to the side of the box.
Another inexpensive way to organize your closet is to install rows of hooks at eye level around the closet. It may also be wise to install a row of hooks at waist height as well. Many items actually come will a little hooks or loops that lend themselves to being hung up. Cloth grocery bags can also be hung from the hooks. These cloth bags can be used to store many different items such as hats, scarves and mittens. Be creative. Perhaps one bag could be cleaning supplies and some clean rags. The bag can be removed on cleaning day and then packed up again after cleaning. As long as the items are light enough almost anything can be stored in the cloth bags.
Another way to arrange a closet storage system that won't cost you any money is to put some thought into what is actually stored in the closet. The best organized closets' should be arranged in a homogenized manner. That means that the items stored in a particular closet should more or less the same. Furthermore the stored items should be accessed at approximately the same frequency. A pair of shoes that are used every day should not be stored with a golf umbrella that is rarely used or items that are used once per year such as outdoor Christmas lights. It goes without saying, if you never use something sell it or throw it out. If you use a particular item once or twice per year, then store that item in a closet with other items used at the same rate. Also store these rarely used items away from heavy traffic areas of your home.
Easy to install and cheap closet storage systems are just as effective as those systems that seem complicated and cost a lot of money. With a little planning there are a number of inexpensive by which you can start to organize your closets. Remember some closet organizers tips are even free. Your total system doesn't have to be completed at once. You can start with some frre or cheap steps and then add to the organization system when you have more time or money.
